Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Recipe

I still remember the first time I made this air fryer BBQ chicken on a random Tuesday when I had zero energy to fire up the grill. I rubbed the chicken with a simple spice blend, tossed it in the basket, and brushed on my favorite BBQ sauce at the very end. Twenty minutes later, I had juicy, sticky, restaurant-style chicken sitting on my counter.
Total Time 25 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1.5 to 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast (3 to 4 pieces) – try to pick pieces that are close in size so they finish cooking at the same time
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika – regular paprika works fine but smoked paprika gives the chicken a deeper, more authentic BBQ flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder – adds savory depth without the risk of burning the way fresh minced garlic can in a hot air fryer
  • 1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper – freshly cracked has more bite than pre-ground pepper sitting in your pantry
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt – helps the rub stick and pulls out the natural juices for extra flavor
  • 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional – skip it entirely if you're cooking for kids or anyone who avoids spice
  • Olive oil or oil spray – helps the seasoning cling to the chicken instead of falling off in the basket
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce – use a good quality bottled sauce or homemade if you have the time since a thin, watery sauce won't get that sticky glaze

Method

  1. Grab a small bowl and stir together the paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne if you're using it. This only takes a minute but it's what gives the chicken its flavor base. Set the bowl aside while you prep the chicken breasts.
  2. Pat the chicken breasts dry with a paper towel so the seasoning has something to stick to. If any pieces are noticeably thicker than others, pound them gently to even out the thickness. This one step prevents dry edges and undercooked centers later on.
  3. Spray or brush one side of each chicken breast with oil, then sprinkle on the spice rub and press it in gently with your fingers. Flip the chicken over and repeat the same process on the other side. Pressing the seasoning in really does make a difference in how well it stays put.
  4. Lightly oil the air fryer basket so the chicken doesn't stick during cooking. Place the chicken presentation side down in a single layer, making sure the pieces aren't overlapping or touching too much. Crowding the basket is one of the easiest ways to end up with uneven cooking.
  5. Set your air fryer to 360°F and cook for 10 minutes. Open the basket, flip each piece with tongs, and cook for another 8 to 10 minutes. You're looking for the internal temperature to hit around 160°F before moving to the next step.
  6. Once the chicken is close to done, brush or spoon the BBQ sauce generously over the top and sides. Slide it back into the air fryer for just 1 to 2 minutes, long enough for the sauce to warm through and get sticky without burning.
  7. Pull the chicken out once it reaches 165°F internally and let it rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. Resting keeps all those juices inside the chicken instead of running out onto your cutting board.

Notes

  • I always use a meat thermometer now because eyeballing chicken doneness led to a few dry dinners early on
  • I let my chicken sit out for about 15 minutes before cooking so it isn't ice cold going into the air fryer, which helps it cook more evenly
  • I never add the BBQ sauce until the very end, since sauce left in that hot air fryer basket too long turns dark and slightly bitter
  • I like spacing the chicken pieces apart in the basket instead of packing them in, since airflow is what gives you that nice exterior
  • I keep a bottle of smoked paprika on hand just for this recipe because it makes such a noticeable difference in the final flavor
