Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks Recipe

I recently tried making chicken drumsticks in my air fryer, and wow, they turned out amazing! I love how quick and easy it is to get that crispy skin without deep frying. The flavor is perfectly seasoned, and the meat stays juicy every time.
Total Time 27 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. chicken drumsticks about 5-6 pieces – I prefer bone-in, skin-on for juiciness.
  • 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil – helps the seasonings stick and browns the skin nicely.
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika – adds a subtle smokiness without overpowering.
  • ½ tsp garlic powder – enhances savory flavor naturally.
  • ¼ tsp onion powder – gives depth and balance.
  • ½ tsp dried oregano – pairs perfectly with chicken.
  • ½ tsp salt – essential for seasoning evenly.
  • ¼ tsp freshly cracked black pepper – freshly ground works best for aroma.
  • tsp cayenne pepper optional – adds a mild kick if you like heat.

Method

  1. I start by preheating the air fryer to 400ºF. While it warms, I mix smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and black pepper. This blend gives the chicken a perfect balance of flavor.
  2. Next, I place the chicken in a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and toss to coat. Then I sprinkle the seasoning mix over the drumsticks, making sure each piece is fully covered. This step locks in flavor and ensures crispy skin.
  3. I arrange the drumsticks in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. They cook for about 22 minutes, flipping halfway through. Using a meat thermometer, I check that the internal temperature reaches 175°F for juicy, tender meat.

Notes

  • I always pat the chicken dry before seasoning for extra crispiness.
  • Preheating the air fryer really makes a difference in even cooking.
  • I like to cook in batches if my air fryer is small to avoid steaming instead of crisping.
  • Adding a light brush of extra oil halfway through gives a golden-brown finish.
  • I sometimes sprinkle a bit of smoked paprika right after cooking for extra aroma.
