Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Nuggets Recipe

I'll be honest with you, some nights I just don't have it in me to bread and fry chicken from scratch, and that's exactly when this air fryer frozen chicken nuggets recipe saves my dinner. I keep a bag of nuggets in the freezer for those chaotic weeknights, and the air fryer turns them golden and crunchy in a fraction of the time the oven takes.

Cook Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • frozen chicken nuggets any brand or type – the star of the dish, and there's no need to thaw them first
  • cooking oil spray optional – a light spray helps the coating turn extra crisp, though it's not required
  • dipping sauce of choice optional – ketchup, honey mustard, or ranch all work beautifully here

Method

  1. I always start by preheating my air fryer to 400°F for about three minutes. A hot basket from the very start helps the nuggets crisp up faster and more evenly. Skipping this step isn't the end of the world, but you'll usually need to add a minute or two to the total cook time.
  2. Once the air fryer is hot, I place the frozen nuggets directly in the basket without thawing them. I spread them out so they're sitting in one even layer, leaving a little space between each piece. If they're touching too much, the air can't circulate properly and you'll end up with soggy patches.
  3. This is the part everyone wants to know: how long do you put frozen chicken nuggets in the air fryer? I cook mine for 8 to 10 minutes total at 400°F, and thinner or smaller nuggets can be done closer to the 8-minute mark. Cooking time also depends a bit on your specific air fryer model, so keep an eye on the first batch.
  4. Around the 4 or 5 minute mark, I pull the basket out and use tongs to flip each nugget over. This step gives you that all-over golden crust instead of one crispy side and one pale side. It only takes a few seconds, so don't skip it even when you're in a hurry.
  5. Before I call them done, I check that the nuggets have hit 165°F internally with a quick-read thermometer, especially if I'm cooking for little ones. Once they're crisp and heated through, I transfer them straight to a plate. Ser

Notes

  • I never overcrowd the basket, even when I'm feeding a hungry group. Cooking in two smaller batches gives me crispier results than cramming everything in at once.
  • I skip the oil spray on nights when I want a lighter meal, since the breading already has enough fat in it to crisp up nicely on its own.
  • I shake the basket gently instead of flipping each nugget individually when I'm short on time. It's not quite as thorough, but it still does the job.
  • I always preheat now, ever since I noticed my nuggets came out noticeably crispier compared to the times I skipped it.
  • I keep my air fryer's manual handy because I've learned every model runs a little differently, and mine tends to cook slightly hotter than most.
