Air Fryer Mini Blooming Onions Recipe

I recently tried making this air fryer crispy mini blooming onions recipe, and honestly, I couldn’t stop eating them! They turned out perfectly golden, crunchy on the outside, and tender inside—just like restaurant-style appetizers.
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • small sweet onions 4–5 pieces – Choose fresh, firm onions for the best texture and mild flavor.
  • all-purpose flour 1 cup – Helps create a crispy coating; sift it for a smoother batter.
  • paprika 1 teaspoon – Adds color and a mild smoky flavor.
  • garlic powder 1 teaspoon – Enhances the savory taste beautifully.
  • salt 1 teaspoon – Balances all the flavors; adjust to taste.
  • black pepper ½ teaspoon – Adds a subtle kick.
  • eggs 2 large – Helps the coating stick well to the onion petals.
  • milk ½ cup – Makes the batter smoother and easier to coat evenly.
  • breadcrumbs 1 cup – Use fine breadcrumbs for a crispier finish.
  • cooking spray as needed – Essential for achieving that golden crunch in the air fryer.

Method

  1. Start by peeling the onions and trimming the top slightly. Carefully cut each onion into a blooming shape by making several downward cuts without slicing through the base. Gently spread the petals apart to create that classic bloom look.
  2. In one bowl, mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and milk until smooth. Place breadcrumbs in a third bowl to create a three-step coating station.
  3. Dip each onion first into the flour mixture, making sure it gets into all the layers. Then coat it with the egg mixture, followed by breadcrumbs. Press gently so the coating sticks well and evenly.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes. Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray and place the coated onions inside, leaving space between them for proper air circulation.
  5. Spray the onions lightly with cooking spray to help them crisp up. Cook for about 12–15 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Check halfway and adjust placement if needed.
  6. Once done, carefully remove the onions and let them cool slightly. Serve them warm with your favorite dipping sauce for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • I always make sure to spread the onion petals well; it helps the coating reach every layer.
  • Don’t skip the cooking spray—it’s key for achieving that crispy finish.
  • I prefer using panko breadcrumbs when I want extra crunch.
  • Let the coated onions rest for a few minutes before air frying so the coating sticks better.
  • I like to season each layer lightly instead of just the outer coating for more flavor.
