Best Bacon Sandwich With Caramelized Onions Recipe

When I first made this bacon sandwich with caramelized onions, it truly felt like love at first bite! The combination of crispy yet smoky bacon paired with the sweet, golden caramelized onions was a game-changer. Sliding the ingredients onto toasted bread created a satisfying crunch, followed by a burst of savory-sweet flavors.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • Thick-cut bacon
  • Large onions
  • Olive oil
  • Butter
  • Bread of your choice
  • Optional add-ons: lettuce tomato, condiments (mayonnaise, mustard, etc.)

Method

  1. To get that sweet, golden flavor, start with the onions. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add your thinly sliced onions, and stir gently. Patience is key here! Cook for about 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and turn golden brown. The smell alone is worth it!
  2. While the onions do their magic, grab a separate skillet and lay down the thick slices of bacon. Fry them to your desired crispness (soft and chewable or crunchy perfection, it’s your call). Once done, drain the bacon on paper towels to remove excess grease.
  3. Next, toast your bread slices until golden. Spread each slice with your favorite condiment; mayonnaise, mustard, or even ketchup could work. Start stacking with caramelized onions as the foundation, add your crunchy bacon, and pile on extras like lettuce or tomato if you like. Close the sandwich with the second slice of bread. Presto, you’re done!

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, deglaze the onion skillet with a splash of red wine or broth.
  • Try cooking bacon in the oven for less mess and evenly crispy results.
  • Toasting the bread on a frying pan with a little butter makes it extra luxurious.
  • Allow onions to cook slowly without rushing to achieve a proper caramelization (sweet, not burnt!).
