Best Ever Baked Ziti Recipe

I still remember the first time I pulled this baked ziti out of the oven—the bubbling cheese, rich sauce, and comforting aroma filled my kitchen instantly. I wanted something hearty yet simple, and this recipe delivered more than I expected. Every bite felt like pure comfort, with layers of flavor coming together beautifully.
Total Time 55 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ziti pasta – Cook just until al dente so it doesn’t turn mushy after baking.
  • 1 pound ground beef – Adds richness; you can also mix with Italian sausage for more flavor.
  • 1 small onion finely chopped – Enhances the sauce with a subtle sweetness.
  • 3 cloves garlic minced – Fresh garlic gives a deeper flavor than pre-minced.
  • 1 24-ounce jar marinara sauce – Use a high-quality brand or homemade for best taste.
  • 1 15-ounce container ricotta cheese – Creates a creamy, rich layer.
  • 1 large egg – Helps bind the ricotta mixture together.
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese – Always shred fresh for better melting.
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese – Adds a sharp savory finish.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil – Used for sautéing and enhancing flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning – Brings balanced herb flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste – Adjust according to preference.
  • Fresh basil optional – Adds a fresh, aromatic touch when serving.

Method

  1. Cook the ziti in salted boiling water until just al dente. Drain and set aside, making sure not to overcook since it will bake later. Toss lightly with a bit of olive oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet and sauté onions until soft, then add garlic. Stir in the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart. Add marinara sauce, seasoning, salt, and pepper, then let it simmer for a few minutes.
  3. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and half of the Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and creamy. This layer adds a rich, velvety texture to the dish.
  4. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the baking dish, then add half the pasta. Spoon half of the ricotta mixture over it, followed by mozzarella. Repeat the layers, finishing with sauce and a generous topping of cheese.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and slightly golden.
  6. Let the baked ziti rest for about 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps the layers set and makes it easier to slice and serve beautifully.

Notes

  • I always cook the pasta slightly underdone so it doesn’t become too soft in the oven.
  • I’ve found that using freshly grated mozzarella melts much better than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Sometimes I add a splash of cream to the sauce for a richer flavor.
  • I like to let the dish rest before serving—it helps everything hold together nicely.
  • When I want extra flavor, I mix in a bit of Italian sausage with the ground beef.
