Black Grape Halloween Punch Recipe

I made this black grape Halloween punch for a party last October, and it vanished in under an hour. The color is a deep, inky purple-black that looks properly creepy in a clear bowl. The taste is sweet, fruity, and fizzy, so even picky kids went back for seconds.
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 cups black grape juice chilled – the deep purple base that gives the punch its dark color
  • 2 cups pineapple juice chilled – adds tropical sweetness and a light foam on top
  • 1 cup lemonade chilled – brings a tart edge so the punch isn't too sugary
  • 4 cups lemon-lime soda chilled – adds the fizz, so pour it in last
  • 6 to 8 drops black gel food coloring – deepens the shade to a true black; skip it for a purple look
  • 1 tablespoon edible glitter – gives a shimmering potion-like swirl; use food-grade only
  • 2 cups vodka optional – turns it into a spiked punch for adults; keep it in a separate bowl
  • 1 cup black grapes or blackberries – spooky floating garnish that doubles as fruit
  • 1 cup gummy worms – creepy crawlies that hang over the bowl's rim
  • Extra black grape juice for the ice ring – freezing juice means no watered-down punch

Method

  1. Pour black grape juice into a bundt pan or ring mold. Drop in a few grapes, blackberries, and gummy worms. Freeze for at least four hours, or overnight, until it is solid.
  2. Place the grape juice, pineapple juice, lemonade, and soda in the fridge a few hours ahead. Cold ingredients keep the punch icy without extra dilution. Warm soda also loses its fizz fast, so don't skip this.
  3. Pour the grape juice, pineapple juice, and lemonade into your punch bowl. Stir slowly until everything blends into one deep purple color. Taste it now and adjust the tartness with a splash more lemonade.
  4. Stir in the black gel food coloring one drop at a time until you like the shade. Sprinkle the edible glitter on top and swirl gently. The glitter will float and shimmer like a witch's potion.
  5. Pour in the lemon-lime soda slowly down the side of the bowl. Give it one soft stir with a ladle. This keeps the bubbles alive for longer.
  6. Pop the ice ring out of its mold by running warm water on the outside for a few seconds. Slide it into the punch bowl. Scatter extra grapes on top and hang a few gummy worms over the edge.
  7. If you want a black Halloween punch that is alcoholic, stir in the vodka just before serving. I like to pour it into a separate bowl. That way the kids' version stays safe and everyone can enjoy the party.
  8. Ladle the punch into clear cups and serve it cold. Stir lightly between refills to keep the glitter moving. Top up the fizz with a little extra soda if it starts to go flat.

Notes

  • I always freeze the ice ring with juice instead of water, because it keeps the punch dark and flavorful as it melts.
  • I add the soda last and pour it slowly, which keeps the punch bubbly through the whole party.
  • I use gel food coloring, since it makes the punch black without thinning the flavor like liquid dyes can.
  • I stir the glitter in right before serving, because it settles to the bottom if it sits too long.
  • I taste before adding the soda, so I can fix sweetness or tartness while the base is still easy to adjust.
  • I serve in clear cups, because the dark color and sparkle look so much better when you can see them.
