Cheesy Chicken Recipe

When I first tried this cheesy chicken recipe, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to prepare. Just a few simple steps, and I ended up with fork-tender chicken smothered in creamy, cheesy sauce.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 8 hours

Ingredients

  • 6 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
  • Tip: Choose fresh chicken not frozen, to maintain tenderness.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Tip: Don’t skip seasoning; it builds flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pro tip: If you love bold garlic try adding granulated garlic instead for extra punch.
  • 1 10.75 oz can condensed cream of chicken soup
  • Suggestion: Use a reduced-sodium option if you prefer.
  • 1 10.75 oz can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • Alternative: Not a fan of mushrooms? Substitute it with another can of cream of chicken soup.
  • 1 11 oz can condensed cream of cheddar cheese soup
  • Tip: This brings the cheesy goodness. If unavailable substitute with Velveeta melted into the sauce.
  • 1 8 oz container sour cream
  • Pro tip: Use full-fat sour cream for a rich texture.

Method

  1. Rinse the chicken breasts under cold water and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. This seasoning gives the chicken a boost of flavor before the cheesy sauce gets added.
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir together the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, and cheddar cheese soup. Blend well until smooth. This mixture is the magic base for your sauce.
  3. Layer the seasoned chicken breasts at the bottom of your slow cooker. Pour the soup mixture over the chicken, ensuring all parts are coated evenly. Set your slow cooker on low and cook for 6 to 8 hours. The low heat and slow cooking will allow the chicken to soak up all of that creamy flavor.
  4. When it’s almost time to serve, gently stir in sour cream to the sauce inside the slow cooker. This is where the dish gets its extra creamy, tangy kick, making it truly irresistible.
  5. Plate the chicken and drizzle it generously with the cheesy sauce. Your cheesy chicken is now ready to impress!

Notes

  • Add extra garlic powder if you like a garlicky kick.
  • Don’t skimp on seasoning the chicken at the start; it infuses the meat with flavor.
  • If you want a thicker sauce, mix in a tablespoon of cornstarch with water during the last hour of cooking.
  • For more cheesy goodness, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the dish before serving.
  • Try adding a squeeze of lemon to balance the creamy richness with a hint of acidity.
