Chicken Philly Sandwich Recipe

Ever since I first made the Chicken Philly Sandwich, it’s been a staple in my household. It’s one of those recipes where each bite feels like a warm hug – tender chicken, caramelized veggies, gooey cheese, and the softest bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil avocado, olive, or vegetable oil: Helps brown the chicken and veggies evenly without sticking.
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast or thighs (thinly sliced): Thighs add juiciness, while breasts are leaner; use what you prefer.
  • Salt and pepper to taste: Enhances the natural flavor of the chicken and vegetables.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder: Adds a savory note that ties the flavors together.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning: A mix of herbs like oregano and thyme for an earthy flavor boost.
  • 1 medium red bell pepper sliced thin: Offers sweetness and a pop of color.
  • 1 medium green bell pepper sliced thin: Adds a slight bitterness to balance the sweetness.
  • 1 medium onion thinly sliced (white or yellow): Caramelizes beautifully, making it sweet and flavorful.
  • 4 slices provolone cheese or cheese of your choice: Melts smoothly for that classic cheesesteak experience.
  • 2 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns sturdy but soft: Perfect for holding all the fillings without falling apart.

Method

  1. Season your chicken slices with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Leave them to rest for a few minutes while you prep the veggies.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced bell peppers and onion, stirring occasionally for about 6-8 minutes. The veggies should soften and develop slight caramelization. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining oil to the same skillet and increase the heat slightly. Cook the chicken for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and fully cooked.
  4. Once the chicken is cooked, lower the heat and return the veggies to the skillet. Stir well to combine the flavors. Separate the mixture into two portions within the skillet.
  5. Place two slices of provolone on each portion of the chicken and veggie mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese.
  6. Lightly toast your hoagie rolls for added texture. Scoop the cheesy chicken and veggie mixture into the rolls, ensuring each bite is packed with flavor.

Notes

  • Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor; avoid frozen veggies or pre-cooked chicken if possible.
  • Grate your cheese fresh if you’re not using slices. Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly.
  • Season generously throughout the cooking process to enhance flavors.
  • Warm your bread slightly in the microwave or oven before stuffing; this prevents it from breaking apart.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan– cook the chicken in batches if needed for an even sear.
