Chocolate Puppy Chow Recipe

I still remember the first time I made this chocolate puppy chow recipe for a family game night, and it disappeared from the bowl faster than anything else on the table. I love it because it takes less than 20 minutes, needs zero baking, and uses ingredients I almost always have sitting in my pantry.
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • 9 cups rice Chex cereal – the classic base for any puppy chow recipe chex lovers swear by since it holds the coating without turning soggy
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips – considered the best chocolate for puppy chow because it melts smoothly and isn't overly sweet
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter – gives the coating its rich nutty flavor, so I always use the creamy kind, not chunky
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter – helps the chocolate mixture turn glossy and pourable instead of thick and clumpy
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – adds warmth to the flavor and I always add it off the heat so it doesn't cook off
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar – creates that signature powdery coating so sift it first to avoid lumps
  • A pinch of salt optional – balances the sweetness if your peanut butter is unsalted

Method

  1. Pour all 9 cups of rice Chex into your largest mixing bowl and set it aside. I always use a bowl bigger than I think I need, because stirring in the chocolate coating later gets messy fast. Giving yourself extra room makes the whole process so much less stressful.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring each time, until the mixture turns smooth and glossy. I never walk away during this step because chocolate can scorch in seconds if left too long.
  3. Once the chocolate mixture is fully melted, remove it from the microwave and stir in the vanilla extract right away. This little step adds a cozy, bakery-style flavor that makes people ask what your secret ingredient is. I always do this off the heat so the vanilla doesn't lose its aroma.
  4. Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal and gently fold everything together with a rubber spatula. I go slowly here so the cereal squares don't break apart, since nobody wants crumbly puppy chow. Keep folding until every piece looks evenly coated in chocolate.
  5. Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-top bag, then add the powdered sugar and seal the bag tightly. Shake it vigorously until every piece is dusted in that classic white coating. I sometimes do this in two batches so the sugar sticks more evenly.
  6. Spread the finished puppy chow out on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and let it cool for about 10 minutes. This step keeps the pieces from clumping together once they're fully set. I like to spread mine in a single layer so it cools faster and evenly.

Notes

  • I always use fresh powdered sugar, since old, clumpy sugar never coats evenly.
  • I melt my chocolate mixture low and slow in the microwave, because rushing it almost always leads to burnt chocolate.
  • I let my puppy chow cool completely before storing it, or the sugar coating turns sticky and melts.
  • I double the batch whenever I'm hosting, because trust me, it goes fast.
  • I keep a damp cloth nearby while shaking the bag, since powdered sugar loves to explode everywhere.
