Creamy Salmon Tzatziki Pasta Salad Recipe

I made this Creamy Salmon Tzatziki Pasta Salad on a hot afternoon when I wanted something light but still filling, and it turned out better than I expected. The flaky salmon paired with cool, garlicky tzatziki felt like a mini vacation in a bowl. I love how the yogurt-based sauce coats every noodle without feeling heavy or greasy.
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces short pasta such as rotini or fusilli – these shapes hold the tzatziki sauce well in every bite
  • 2 salmon fillets about 6 ounces each – fresh salmon flakes beautifully; avoid previously frozen fillets if you can, since they release extra water
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt – full-fat yogurt gives the creamiest texture so skip the low-fat version if you want a richer sauce
  • 1/2 cup cucumber grated and squeezed dry – squeezing out the liquid keeps your pasta salad from turning watery
  • 2 cloves garlic minced – fresh garlic has a much brighter bite than the jarred, pre-minced kind
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill chopped – dried dill works in a pinch, but fresh dill gives a cleaner, grassier flavor
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice – bottled juice tends to taste flat so a real lemon makes a noticeable difference
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil – a good quality extra virgin olive oil adds a lovely fruity note to the salmon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt – I like to season the salmon and the sauce separately so nothing tastes bland
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper – freshly cracked pepper has more punch than pre-ground
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese – grate or crumble this fresh rather than using the pre-crumbled bagged kind which is often dry and chalky
  • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes halved – these add a juicy pop of color and a touch of natural sweetness
  • 2 tablespoons red onion finely chopped – soaking it in cold water for a few minutes softens the sharp bite

Method

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add your pasta. Cook it until al dente, following the package instructions closely. Drain it and rinse briefly under cool water to stop the cooking and prevent sticking.
  2. Place your salmon fillets on a lined baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast at 400°F for about 12 to 15 minutes, until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Let it cool slightly before flaking it into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, dill, and lemon juice. Stir everything together until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust the salt or lemon to your liking before setting it aside.
  4. Add the cooled pasta to a large bowl along with the flaked salmon, cherry tomatoes, red onion, and feta. Pour the tzatziki sauce over the top and gently fold everything together. Try not to overmix so the salmon stays in nice, tender pieces.
  5. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes before serving. This resting time lets the flavors settle in and blend together nicely. A short chill also makes the salad taste even more refreshing on a warm day.

Notes

  • I always squeeze the grated cucumber really well, since skipping this step is the number one reason the sauce turns watery
  • I like to season the salmon on its own before mixing, because it keeps the fish flavorful even under the sauce
  • I never toss the salad while the pasta is still warm, since it can make the yogurt sauce break and turn thin
  • I taste the tzatziki before adding it to the pasta, since garlic strength can vary a lot between cloves
  • I keep a little extra lemon juice on hand in case the salad tastes like it needs a brighter finish the next day
