Crispy Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Shrimp Recipe

I recently made this Crispy Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Shrimp recipe, and it quickly became one of my favorite seafood dinners. The shrimp turn out perfectly crispy on the outside while staying juicy and tender inside. I love how the garlic and Parmesan create a rich, savory flavor without making the dish heavy.
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces large raw shrimp peeled and deveined – Large shrimp stay juicy and cook evenly in the air fryer.
  • ¼ cup egg whites or fat-free liquid egg substitute – Helps the coating stick without adding excess fat.
  • ¼ cup seasoned breadcrumbs – Creates a crispy golden crust.
  • 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese – Freshly grated cheese melts and browns better than pre-packaged varieties.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder – Adds a deep garlic flavor throughout the coating.
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning – Brings a blend of herbs that complements seafood beautifully.
  • Nonstick cooking spray – Prevents sticking and helps the coating crisp up evenly.
  • Fresh parsley chopped (optional) – Adds color and freshness for serving.
  • Lemon wedges optional – Brightens the flavor with a fresh citrus finish.

Method

  1. Start by peeling and devening the shrimp if needed. Pat them completely dry with paper towels because excess moisture can prevent the coating from becoming crispy. Dry shrimp also help the coating stick better.
  2. In a shallow bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Stir everything together until the ingredients are evenly distributed. This mixture will create a flavorful crispy exterior.
  3. Place the egg whites or egg substitute into another shallow bowl. The egg mixture acts as a binder and helps the breadcrumb coating adhere to the shrimp during cooking
  4. Dip each shrimp into the egg mixture first. Then coat it thoroughly in the Parmesan breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently so the crumbs stick evenly on all sides.
  5. Preheat your air fryer according to the manufacturer's instructions. A preheated air fryer helps the shrimp start crisping immediately and promotes even cooking.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange the coated shrimp in a single layer, leaving space between each piece so the hot air can circulate properly.
  7. Cook the shrimp at 400°F (200°C) for about 8 to 10 minutes. Halfway through cooking, carefully flip the shrimp to ensure both sides become golden brown and crispy.
  8. The shrimp should be opaque and firm when fully cooked. Avoid overcooking because shrimp can become rubbery very quickly once they pass the ideal cooking point.
  9. Transfer the cooked shrimp to a serving platter. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve with fresh lemon wedges for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

  • I always pat the shrimp completely dry before coating because it creates a much crispier texture.
  • I prefer freshly grated Parmesan since it melts and browns more evenly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • I avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket because proper airflow is essential for crispiness.
  • I lightly spray the coated shrimp before cooking to help achieve a golden-brown finish.
  • I check the shrimp a minute early since different air fryer models can cook at different speeds.
  • I sometimes add a little lemon zest to the coating for extra freshness.
  • I serve the shrimp immediately because they are crispiest right after cooking
