DIY Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

I recently made a DIY Dog Birthday Cake Recipe for my dog, and I have to say, it was one of the most rewarding experiences in the kitchen. Watching my pup’s excitement while I prepared the cake made the whole process so much fun.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ground oats – I like to grind them fresh for a smoother texture. You can also use almond flour for a grain-free option.
  • 1 tsp baking powder – helps the cake rise without any harsh chemicals.
  • 1/4 cup natural unsalted peanut butter – make sure it’s free from xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce – adds moisture and a hint of natural sweetness.
  • 1 egg – binds the ingredients together for a perfect cake structure.
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt – creamy and healthy; avoid flavored yogurts with added sugar.
  • A handful of blueberries – mashed to create a natural pretty color and subtle sweetness.

Method

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Grease your cake tin or ramekin with coconut oil or a light cooking spray. This ensures your cake won’t stick and makes cleanup easier.
  2. Grind your oats into a fine powder using a food processor. Combine the oats and baking powder in a bowl. Then, add peanut butter, applesauce, and the egg, mixing until the batter is smooth.
  3. Pour the batter into your prepared tin and bake for 25 minutes. Check with a toothpick; it should come out clean. Let the cake cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  4. Mash the blueberries and fold them into Greek yogurt until creamy. Spread the frosting on your cooled cake or between layers if you’re making a double-decker cake.
  5. If stacking cakes, place frosting between layers. Finish with a few whole blueberries on top for a festive look. You can add dog-friendly treats as decorations too.

Notes

  • I always sift the ground oats for a smoother cake texture.
  • Let the cake cool fully before frosting; otherwise, it slides off.
  • I like to add a few blueberries on top for visual appeal and extra nutrition.
  • Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor – frozen applesauce or old peanut butter can alter taste.
