Easy Maple Latte Recipe

I started making this maple latte at home after getting tired of spending five dollars every single morning just to get my coffee fix. I remember tweaking the ratio of espresso to maple syrup about a dozen times before it finally tasted right to me.
Total Time 8 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • espresso: 2 shots about ½ cup — the base flavor of the drink, so use freshly brewed for the best taste
  • milk: 1 cup — whole milk gives the creamiest texture though any milk you have works fine
  • real maple syrup: 2 tablespoons — always use genuine maple syrup not pancake syrup, for a deeper flavor
  • vanilla extract: ¼ teaspoon optional — adds a subtle warmth that rounds out the maple flavor nicely
  • ground cinnamon: a tiny pinch optional — just a touch turns this into a lightly spiced maple latte
  • whipped cream: for topping optional — makes the drink feel extra indulgent and coffee-shop worthy

Method

  1. Start by brewing two shots of espresso using your espresso machine, moka pot, or even strong instant coffee if that's what you have on hand. Pour the hot espresso directly into your mug so it's ready to go.
  2. While the espresso is still warm, add your maple syrup and stir it in thoroughly until fully dissolved. This step matters because the syrup blends much more smoothly into hot espresso than it does into cold milk later on.
  3. In a small saucepan, gently heat your milk over medium heat until it's hot but not boiling, which usually takes about two to three minutes. Keep an eye on it, since milk can scorch quickly if you walk away.
  4. Once your milk is warm, use a frother or a whisk to create a light, airy foam on top. If you don't have a frother, you can pour the warm milk into a jar with a lid and shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds instead.
  5. Slowly pour your frothed milk into the mug with the espresso and maple syrup, holding back the foam with a spoon until the end. Spoon the foam on top, add whipped cream if you're using it, and sprinkle with a little cinnamon before serving.

Notes

  • I always taste my latte before adding extra maple syrup, since real maple syrup is naturally sweet and a little goes further than you'd think.
  • I like to warm my mug with hot water first, which keeps the drink hotter for longer once it's assembled.
  • I never let my milk come to a full boil, since it changes the texture and can leave a slightly burnt taste behind.
  • I keep a small bottle of real maple syrup specifically for drinks, since it saves me from grabbing the pancake syrup by mistake.
  • I found that a splash of vanilla extract makes the maple flavor taste even richer without overpowering it.
