Easy Thanksgiving Cocktail Recipe

I make this cocktail every single year the moment my cranberry sauce starts simmering on the stove, and it's turned into my favorite part of hosting. I love that I can mix the batch in under ten minutes and still have time to finish setting the table. To me, there's nothing better than handing guests a chilled, ruby-red glass the second they walk through the door.
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh cranberry juice – pick 100% juice not the sugary cocktail blend, for real tart flavor
  • 1 cup orange juice freshly squeezed – fresh squeezed makes a noticeably brighter drink than bottled
  • 1 ½ cups vodka – a clean mid-shelf vodka works best so it doesn't overpower the fruit
  • ½ cup orange liqueur – adds warmth and a subtle citrus depth to every sip
  • ¼ cup simple syrup – homemade only takes 5 minutes and tastes far less artificial
  • 1 cup club soda or ginger beer – pour this in last so the fizz doesn't go flat
  • Fresh cranberries for garnish – frozen ones work in a pinch but fresh ones look prettier floating on top
  • Orange slices for garnish – thin rounds release more aroma than thick wedges
  • Rosemary sprigs optional – a festive touch that makes the glass smell like the holidays

Method

  1. I combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan and warm it over medium heat. I stir gently until the sugar fully dissolves, which only takes about three minutes. Then I pull it off the heat and let it cool completely before using it in the drink.
  2. In my large pitcher, I pour in the cranberry juice, fresh orange juice, vodka, and orange liqueur. I give everything a good stir so the flavors start blending right away. This base can sit in the fridge for hours if I'm getting ahead on prep.
  3. Once my syrup has cooled, I pour it straight into the pitcher with the other ingredients. I stir again to make sure the sweetness is evenly distributed through the whole batch. I always taste it here and adjust if I want it sweeter or more tart.
  4. I pop the pitcher in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. Chilling it properly matters more than people think, since a cold base means less ice melting in the glass later. If I'm short on time, I add extra ice directly to the pitcher instead.
  5. Right before guests arrive, I fill glasses with ice and pour the chilled base over the top. I finish each glass with a splash of club soda or ginger beer for that fresh bubbly lift. A quick stir, a garnish, and it's ready to hand off.

Notes

  • I always chill my glasses in the freezer for ten minutes beforehand because it keeps the drink colder for longer.
  • I squeeze my orange juice the same day I'm serving since it loses brightness if it sits too long.
  • I taste my syrup-to-juice ratio before adding vodka, because it's much easier to adjust sweetness early.
  • I keep my club soda separate until serving time so the batch doesn't go flat while it waits in the fridge.
  • I rim a few glasses with sugar for guests who like a sweeter first sip.
