Easy Thanksgiving Dip Recipe

Every Thanksgiving, I end up juggling the turkey, the sides, and about a dozen other things at once, so the one appetizer I refuse to stress over is the dip. I started making this easy Thanksgiving dip recipe a few years back when I needed something that came together fast but still looked (and tasted) like I'd put real effort in.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened — this is the creamy base, so let it sit out so it blends smoothly instead of leaving lumps
  • 1/2 cup sour cream — adds tang and keeps the dip from feeling too heavy or dense
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise — makes the texture extra smooth and rich a must for easy dip recipes with mayonnaise
  • 1 packet 1 oz ranch seasoning mix — this is where most of the flavor comes from, don't skip it
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese — grate it fresh off the block for the best melt and flavor
  • 6 slices bacon cooked and crumbled — adds smoky, salty crunch that makes this feel like a crack dip recipe
  • 1/3 cup green onions thinly sliced — use the green tops for a pop of color and mild onion bite
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder — rounds out the savory flavor without overpowering the ranch
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper — just enough to balance the richness

Method

  1. Start by making sure your cream cheese is properly softened at room temperature, since cold cream cheese just won't blend right. In a mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Beat it with a hand mixer or whisk it by hand until the mixture turns smooth and creamy with no lumps left behind.
  2. Sprinkle in the ranch seasoning packet, garlic powder, and black pepper, then stir everything together until it's evenly distributed. Fold in a cup of the shredded cheddar along with most of the crumbled bacon, saving a little of each for topping later. This is where the flavor really starts coming together.
  3. Spread the mixture evenly into your greased 9-inch baking dish, smoothing the top with a spatula so it bakes evenly. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese and bacon bits over the top so they get melty and slightly crisp. This little step makes the finished dip look just as good as it tastes.
  4. Place the dish into a preheated 350°F oven and bake for about 18 to 20 minutes. You're looking for the edges to turn golden and the cheese on top to be fully melted and bubbling. Keep an eye on it near the end so the top doesn't brown too quickly.
  5. Pull the dip out of the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving, since it's extremely hot right out of the oven. Scatter the reserved green onions over the top for a fresh, colorful finish. Serve it warm alongside crackers, chips, or sliced veggies.

Notes

  • I always grate my own cheese instead of using the bagged pre-shredded kind, since it melts so much smoother.
  • I let my cream cheese sit out for a full 30 minutes before mixing, which saves me from fighting lumps later.
  • I cook my bacon until it's properly crispy, because soggy bacon just sinks into the dip and loses its crunch.
  • I taste the mixture before baking and add a pinch more pepper if it needs it, since baking mutes seasoning slightly.
  • I bake it in a wide, shallow dish rather than a deep one, so I get more of that golden, bubbly surface area.
