Golden Ground Turkey and Rice Skillet Recipe

I recently made this golden ground turkey and rice skillet, and it honestly surprised me with how comforting it turned out. I was looking for something quick, hearty, and made in just one pan after a long day. The flavors came together so beautifully that I ended up going back for seconds
Total Time 45 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey – lean protein that keeps the dish light but filling; I prefer 93% lean for better flavor.
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice uncooked – absorbs all the savory flavors while cooking; rinse it for fluffier texture.
  • 1 small onion finely chopped – builds the base flavor and adds natural sweetness when sautéed.
  • 3 cloves garlic minced – gives a deep aroma; always use fresh garlic instead of pre-minced for best taste.
  • 1 bell pepper diced – adds color, crunch, and a mild sweetness to balance the savory turkey.
  • 2 cups chicken broth – helps cook the rice and enhances overall flavor; low-sodium is best for control.
  • 1 can 14.5 oz diced tomatoes – brings acidity and richness that ties everything together.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika – adds a smoky warmth that enhances the “golden” flavor profile.
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano – gives a subtle earthy herbal note.
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin – deepens the flavor with a warm slightly nutty spice.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil – used for sautéing; extra virgin gives the best aroma.
  • Salt and pepper to taste – essential for balancing all flavors properly.
  • Fresh parsley for garnish – adds freshness at the end and brightens the dish visually.

Method

  1. Before cooking, I always chop all my vegetables and measure spices. This makes the cooking process smoother and prevents anything from overcooking. Having everything ready helps me stay organized and stress-free.
  2. I heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Then I add onions, garlic, and bell peppers until they soften. This step builds the flavorful base of the entire dish.
  3. Next, I add ground turkey and break it apart as it cooks. I let it brown properly so it develops a rich, savory flavor. Seasoning it here ensures every bite is well flavored.
  4. Once the turkey is cooked, I stir in rice, paprika, cumin, and oregano. I mix everything so the rice absorbs the spices evenly. This step is where the dish starts turning beautifully aromatic.
  5. I pour in chicken broth and diced tomatoes and bring it to a boil. Then I reduce heat, cover, and let it simmer until rice is cooked. This slow cooking helps everything blend into a comforting one-pan meal.
  6. After the liquid is absorbed, I fluff the rice gently with a fork. I taste and adjust seasoning if needed for perfect balance. Finally, I garnish with fresh parsley before serving it warm.

Notes

  • I always toast the rice lightly before adding liquid for a deeper flavor.
  • I avoid over-stirring while simmering so the rice stays fluffy.
  • I let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving for better texture.
  • I sometimes add a splash of lemon juice at the end for freshness.
  • Using homemade broth makes a noticeable difference in richness.
  • I don’t rush the browning of turkey—it builds essential flavor.
