Homemade Lemonade Recipe

There’s something special about making homemade lemonade from scratch, and I honestly don’t think store-bought versions can compare. The first time I made this recipe, I was surprised by how bright, fresh, and naturally refreshing it tasted. I love that I can adjust the sweetness exactly how I like it while keeping the lemon flavor vibrant.
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • cups freshly squeezed lemon juice about 6–8 large lemons – Fresh lemons provide the brightest flavor. Avoid bottled juice if possible for the freshest taste.
  • cups granulated sugar – Dissolving the sugar into a simple syrup creates a smoother lemonade without graininess.
  • 1 cup water for making the simple syrup – Heating the sugar with water helps it dissolve completely.
  • 7 cups cold water – Chilled filtered water gives the cleanest and most refreshing flavor.
  • Ice cubes – Keep the lemonade perfectly cold without needing extra refrigeration before serving.
  • Lemon slices optional – Adds a beautiful presentation and a little extra citrus aroma.
  • Fresh mint leaves optional – A refreshing garnish that complements the lemon beautifully.

Method

  1. Wash the lemons thoroughly before cutting them in half. Juice them using a citrus juicer until you have about one and a half cups of fresh juice. Remove any seeds and strain if you prefer a smoother lemonade.
  2. Pour one cup of water into a small saucepan and add the sugar. Heat over medium heat while stirring until the sugar completely dissolves. Remove from the heat and allow the syrup to cool slightly.
  3. Pour the fresh lemon juice into a large pitcher. Add the cooled simple syrup followed by the cold water. Stir everything together thoroughly so the flavors blend evenly.
  4. Give the lemonade a quick taste before serving. If you prefer it sweeter, stir in a little more syrup. If you enjoy a stronger citrus flavor, simply add a bit more fresh lemon juice.
  5. Place the pitcher in the refrigerator for at least thirty minutes. Chilling allows the flavors to combine and creates a much more refreshing drink.
  6. Fill serving glasses with ice cubes before pouring in the lemonade. Garnish each glass with fresh lemon slices and mint leaves for a beautiful presentation and extra freshness.

Notes

  • I always roll the lemons on the countertop before juicing because it helps release more juice.
  • I prefer using freshly squeezed lemon juice since the flavor is much brighter than bottled juice.
  • I let the simple syrup cool before mixing it into the lemonade so the drink stays cold.
  • I usually chill the lemonade for at least thirty minutes because the flavor improves as it rests.
  • I like adding lemon slices only right before serving to keep them looking fresh.
  • I often make extra simple syrup so I can easily adjust the sweetness later.
  • I use filtered cold water because it gives the cleanest tasting lemonade.
  • I always serve it over plenty of ice on hot summer days.
