Homemade Sweet Tea Recipe

After making this homemade sweet tea recipe several times, I can honestly say it has become one of my favorite refreshing drinks for warm days. I love how simple the ingredients are, yet the flavor tastes like something you'd order at a restaurant. The secret ingredient makes the tea incredibly smooth without any harsh bitterness.
Total Time 3 hours 20 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 pinch baking soda – A small pinch helps reduce bitterness and creates a smoother-tasting tea. Don't add too much or it may affect the flavor.
  • 2 cups boiling water – Hot water helps extract the rich flavor from the tea bags efficiently.
  • 6 black tea bags – Regular black tea works best because it provides the bold traditional sweet tea taste.
  • ¾ cup white sugar – Dissolves easily in the hot tea and creates the signature sweetness.
  • 6 cups cool water – Dilutes the concentrated tea and balances the flavor for a refreshing drink.

Method

  1. Start by placing a pinch of baking soda into a large heat-proof pitcher. This small ingredient helps create a smoother flavor and reduces any bitterness from the tea. Make sure the pitcher can safely handle hot liquids.
  2. Pour the boiling water into the pitcher and immediately add the tea bags. Cover the pitcher and allow the tea bags to steep for about 15 minutes. This gives the tea enough time to develop a rich flavor without becoming overly strong.
  3. Once the steeping time is complete, carefully remove the tea bags and discard them. Avoid squeezing the tea bags because this can release extra tannins and create bitterness in the finished tea.
  4. Add the sugar while the tea is still warm. Stir continuously until every bit of sugar has completely dissolved. This step ensures the sweetness is evenly distributed throughout the tea.
  5. Pour the cool water into the pitcher and stir well. The additional water balances the concentrated tea and creates the perfect drinking strength.
  6. Transfer the pitcher to the refrigerator and allow it to chill completely. Cold sweet tea tastes smoother and more refreshing, making it perfect for hot weather.
  7. Once chilled, pour the sweet tea over ice-filled glasses. Garnish with lemon slices or fresh mint if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy every refreshing sip.

Notes

  • I always use fresh tea bags because older tea bags can lose flavor.
  • I avoid squeezing the tea bags when removing them to keep the tea smooth.
  • I chill the tea completely before serving so the ice doesn't dilute the flavor too quickly.
  • I sometimes add lemon slices during chilling for a subtle citrus taste.
  • I use filtered water whenever possible because it noticeably improves the overall flavor.
  • I stir the sugar thoroughly while the tea is hot to ensure perfect sweetness.
