Kids Halloween Fruit Tray Recipe

I made this Kids Halloween Fruit Tray for a school party, and it disappeared in minutes. The banana ghosts, eyeball grapes, and jack-o'-lantern oranges had every kid giggling. I loved that it needed no oven and only a handful of simple steps.
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons gluten-free white chocolate chips: Melts into the "white" of the eyeballs so use fresh chips.
  • ½ pound green grapes: Become the creepy eyeballs so pick firm, dry ones.
  • 2 teaspoons gluten-free mini dark chocolate chips: Act as pupils and ghost faces so keep them small.
  • 6 whole mandarin oranges: Turn into tiny pumpkins so choose ones with smooth skin.
  • Black edible marker: Draws the jack-o'-lantern faces so test it on a spare peel first.
  • 4 ripe bananas peeled and halved crosswise: Make the ghosts, so use ripe but still firm fruit.
  • 1 large red apple halved, cored, and thinly sliced: Forms the colorful base, so slice it thin and evenly.
  • 3 tablespoons caramel topping: Adds a sweet drizzle so warm it slightly for easy pouring.
  • 2 tablespoons chopped roasted unsalted peanuts: Give crunch so skip them for nut-free kids.

Method

  1. Wash the grapes, oranges, and apple, then pat them completely dry. Dry fruit helps the chocolate stick and the marker glide smoothly. Set out your tools and the platter so everything is ready.
  2. Put the white chocolate chips in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat them on high for 40 seconds, stirring every 20 seconds, until smooth. Pour the melted chocolate into a zip-top bag and snip a tiny corner.
  3. Pipe a small round of white chocolate onto each grape to make the white part of the eye. Quickly press one mini dark chocolate chip into the center as the pupil. Let them dry completely before moving them.
  4. Grab your black edible marker and draw faces on the mandarin oranges. Try triangle eyes, a toothy grin, or a silly surprised mouth. Let the ink dry fully so it does not smudge on the tray.
  5. Peel the bananas and cut each one in half crosswise. Press mini chocolate chips into each half, pointed side down, to form the ghost faces. Two eyes and a round mouth are all you need.
  6. Cut the apple in half, remove the core, and slice it thinly. Lay the slices across the serving platter as a colorful bed. The red skin gives the tray a nice pop of color.
  7. Drizzle the caramel over the apple slices and scatter the chopped peanuts on top. Then arrange the ghost bananas, eyeball grapes, and jack-o'-lantern oranges across the platter. Step back and enjoy your spooky masterpiece

Notes

  • I always dry the grapes well, because even a little moisture makes the chocolate slide off.
  • I pipe the eyeballs onto a parchment-lined plate first, which makes moving them to the tray easier.
  • I place the banana ghosts last, since bananas brown quickly once they sit out.
  • I test the marker on a spare orange peel, so I know the face will not bleed.
  • I let kids press in the chocolate chip faces, and they love owning their ghost.
  • I slice the apple just before serving, which keeps the slices crisp and bright.
