Nut Free Halloween Treat Recipe

I started making this nut-free Halloween treat mix the year my son was diagnosed with a peanut and tree nut allergy, and honestly, it saved me every single October since. I used to stress over what I could send to his classroom party, and now I just throw this together in ten minutes flat.
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 cups popped butter popcorn — pick a nut-free brand or pop your own so you know exactly what's in the bag
  • 2 cups pretzel sticks — these add the salty crunch that balances out all the sweet candy
  • 1 ½ cups candy-coated chocolate candies — go with a peanut-free variety and double-check the packaging every season since formulas can change
  • 6 crispy rice treat bars cut into small squares — pre-made bars save time, but homemade ones work just as well
  • 1 ½ cups candy corn — the classic Halloween touch that ties the whole mix together
  • 1 cup rainbow-coated chocolate chips — these add extra pops of color that make the mix look festive
  • ½ cup pumpkin seeds optional — a fun crunchy swap-in if you want a slightly less sugary bite in the mix

Method

  1. Start by popping your popcorn if you're making it from scratch, then pick through it and remove any unpopped kernels. You want a clean base with nothing hard hiding in the mix. Let it cool slightly before moving to the next step.
  2. While your popcorn cools, slice your crispy rice treat bars into small, bite-sized squares. Keeping the pieces small makes the mix easier to scoop and share, especially for little hands grabbing a handful.
  3. Add your popcorn, pretzel sticks, candy-coated chocolates, crispy rice squares, candy corn, and rainbow chocolate chips into one large mixing bowl. Add everything gradually rather than all at once, which keeps the mix from clumping unevenly.
  4. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, gently toss everything together until each ingredient is evenly distributed. Be gentle here, since tossing too roughly can crush your popcorn and crispy rice pieces.
  5. Once everything is mixed, scoop portions into individual treat bags, cups, or a big festive bowl for sharing. This mix is ready to eat the second it's combined, so there's no waiting around before serving it up.

Notes

  • I always double-check every single candy label before buying, since manufacturing facilities and ingredients can change season to season.
  • I add my popcorn last if I'm short on time, since it stays fresher and crunchier the less it sits mixed in with everything else.
  • I like using a mix of plain and rainbow chocolate chips for extra visual pop without adding more sugar overall.
  • I keep a few extra bags of the same candy on hand in case I need to restock a batch quickly for a last-minute party request.
  • I always make a little extra, because between sneaky snacking and party favors, this mix disappears faster than I expect.
