Oven Baked Hash Browns Recipe

I recently decided to try making hash browns at home, and I’m so glad I did! These oven-baked hash browns turned out crispy, golden, and far less greasy than the deep-fried versions I’ve had before. They’re perfect for a hearty breakfast or a satisfying side dish. Plus, they’re surprisingly easy to make and much healthier than you might think.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes – Waxy potatoes like Maris Pipers or Jersey Royals hold their shape well while starchy potatoes like russets give a crispier texture.
  • 1 small onion – Adds flavor and moisture to the hash browns.
  • 1 large egg – Acts as a binder to hold the mixture together.
  • ½ tsp garlic granules – Enhances the savory taste.
  • Salt and pepper – To taste.

Method

  1. Begin by grating the potatoes and onion using a box grater or a food processor. This will create fine shreds that cook evenly.
  2. Place the grated mixture onto a clean kitchen towel. Wrap it up and twist to squeeze out as much moisture as possible. This step is crucial for achieving crispy hash browns.
  3. Transfer the dried mixture into a large bowl. Add the egg, garlic granules, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
  4. Lightly grease a baking sheet with parchment paper or non-stick spray. Take handfuls of the potato mixture and form them into small patties. Place them onto the prepared baking sheet and gently flatten each one.
  5. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Bake the hash browns for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, flip each hash brown over, press down gently, and bake for an additional 20 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • Use a Clean Towel: Ensure the kitchen towel is clean to prevent any unwanted flavors.
  • Uniform Size: Make sure all hash browns are of equal size for even cooking.
  • Don't Overcrowd: Leave space between each hash brown on the baking sheet to allow air circulation for crispiness.
  • Check for Crispiness: If you prefer extra crispy hash browns, bake them a few minutes longer, keeping an eye to prevent burning.
