Red White Blue Fruit Kabobs Recipe

I recently made these Red White Blue Fruit Kabobs for a summer gathering, and they disappeared from the serving platter within minutes. The combination of juicy berries and soft angel food cake creates a light and refreshing dessert that feels festive without requiring much effort
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 prepared angel food cake cut into 1-inch cubes – Angel food cake is light, fluffy, and holds its shape well on skewers. Store-bought or homemade both work great.
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries washed and stems removed – Choose ripe, bright red strawberries for the best flavor and color.
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries – Firm fresh blueberries provide sweetness and the perfect patriotic blue color.
  • 10 –12 wooden skewers – Standard wooden skewers make assembly easy and serving convenient.
  • Optional: 2 ounces melted white or dark chocolate for drizzling – Adds an extra layer of sweetness and elegance.

Method

  1. Start by cutting the angel food cake into uniform 1-inch cubes. Try to keep the cubes large enough so they won't crumble when threaded onto skewers.
  2. A sharp serrated knife works best for making clean cuts. Set the cake pieces aside while preparing the fruit.
  3. Rinse the strawberries and blueberries under cool running water. Remove the green tops from the strawberries and pat all fruit dry with paper towels.
  4. Dry fruit helps prevent excess moisture from soaking into the cake. This step also keeps the kabobs looking fresh and appealing.
  5. Place the cake cubes, strawberries, and blueberries in separate bowls or on a tray. Organizing the ingredients beforehand makes assembly much faster.
  6. Having everything within reach helps maintain a consistent pattern on every skewer.
  7. Begin threading a strawberry onto the skewer, followed by a cube of angel food cake and a few blueberries. Continue alternating the ingredients until the skewer is nearly full.
  8. You can create your own pattern, but alternating colors makes the presentation especially attractive.
  9. If desired, melt a small amount of chocolate and drizzle it over the assembled kabobs. The chocolate adds richness while complementing the sweet berries.
  10. Allow the chocolate to set for a few minutes before serving for the best appearance.
  11. Place the completed kabobs on a serving platter. Refrigerate them for about 15 to 20 minutes if you prefer a colder dessert.
  12. Serve immediately for the freshest flavor and texture. These kabobs are especially refreshing on warm summer days.

Notes

  • I always pat the berries completely dry before assembly because excess moisture can soften the cake.
  • I like using slightly firm strawberries since they stay secure on the skewer.
  • I sometimes chill the angel food cake for 20 minutes before cutting to make cleaner cubes.
  • I find that assembling the kabobs a couple of hours before serving gives the best balance of freshness and convenience.
  • I love adding a light drizzle of white chocolate when serving these at parties because it makes them look extra special.
  • I arrange the ingredients in a repeating red-white-blue pattern for the most eye-catching presentation.
