Sparkling Lemonade Recipe

I still remember the first time I added a splash of sparkling water to my regular lemonade, and honestly, it changed everything for me. I make this drink almost every weekend now because it's refreshing, pretty to look at, and takes barely any effort. My kids beg for it, and I love that I can whip up a pitcher in minutes
Total Time 3 hours 15 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar – this dissolves into the water to create your simple syrup base
  • 1 cup water for the syrup – heating it with sugar helps everything blend smoothly instead of sinking to the bottom of your glass
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice – I always squeeze my own lemons because bottled juice tastes flat and a bit bitter in comparison
  • 4 to 5 cups cold water – used to dilute the lemonade to your preferred strength
  • Lemon or lime flavored sparkling water chilled – this is what gives the drink its signature fizzy kick, so keep it cold until serving
  • Ice cubes as needed – helps chill each glass instantly without watering down the flavor too fast
  • Lemon or lime slices for garnish – a simple touch that makes the drink look bakery-shop worthy

Method

  1. Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar fully dissolves, which usually takes just a couple of minutes. Avoid letting the mixture boil, since that can burn the sugar or evaporate too much liquid.
  2. While the syrup cools slightly, juice enough fresh lemons to measure one full cup. This typically takes around four to six medium lemons depending on their size and juiciness. Fresh juice makes a noticeable difference in flavor compared to bottled versions.
  3. Pour the cooled simple syrup and fresh lemon juice into your pitcher. Add four to five cups of cold water, adjusting based on how strong or mild you like your lemonade. Stir everything together until fully combined.
  4. Place the pitcher in the refrigerator and let it chill for two to three hours. This resting time allows the flavors to settle and get properly cold before serving. Skipping this step can leave your drink tasting a bit too sharp.
  5. Right before serving, fill each glass about two-thirds full with your chilled lemonade base. Top the remaining third off with cold sparkling water so it stays bubbly and fresh. Garnish with a lemon or lime slice for a beautiful finishing touch.

Notes

  • I always add the sparkling water last, right before serving, because it goes flat quickly once mixed in early
  • I taste-test the lemonade base before chilling so I can adjust sweetness or tartness while it's still easy to fix
  • I keep a batch of lemon juice frozen in small portions so I can make this recipe on a whim
  • I use large ice cubes instead of small ones since they melt slower and won't water down my drink as fast
  • I chill my glasses in the freezer for ten minutes beforehand for an extra refreshing sip
