Spicy Thai Basil Slaw Recipe

I recently made this spicy Thai basil slaw, and honestly, it completely surprised me with how fresh and vibrant it tasted. I love recipes that come together quickly, and this one felt effortless yet impressive. The mix of crunchy veggies, zesty citrus, and aromatic basil created such a refreshing balance
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 12

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cucumber diced – adds freshness and a cooling crunch
  • 1 14 oz bag coleslaw mix – saves prep time and gives a great texture
  • 1 10 oz bag shredded purple cabbage – adds color and extra crunch
  • 1 –2 jalapeños seeded and finely chopped – adjust spice level to your taste
  • 1/4 cup Thai basil chopped – gives a unique, slightly spicy herbal flavor
  • 1/2 red onion finely chopped – adds a sharp bite and depth
  • 3/4 cup cilantro chopped – brings freshness and brightness
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil – creates a rich nutty base for the dressing
  • Juice of 2 large oranges – natural sweetness and citrus balance
  • Juice and zest of 1 lime – enhances tanginess and aroma
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon – adds extra acidity for balance
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce – brings savory umami flavor
  • 1 tsp onion powder – boosts overall flavor
  • 1 tsp garlic powder – adds depth without overpowering
  • 1 tsp salt – enhances all ingredients
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds – adds texture and a nutty finish

Method

  1. Start by dicing the cucumber, chopping the onion, and finely slicing the jalapeños. Add them to a large bowl along with the coleslaw mix and purple cabbage. Toss in the cilantro and Thai basil for a fresh herbal base.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together sesame oil, orange juice, lime juice and zest, lemon juice, soy sauce, and spices. Mix until everything is well combined and slightly emulsified. The citrus and sesame oil create a beautifully balanced dressing.
  3. Pour the dressing over the vegetable mixture. Toss everything thoroughly so the veggies are evenly coated. This step ensures every bite is flavorful and well-seasoned.
  4. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the slaw for added crunch and nuttiness. Give it one final toss to distribute the seeds evenly. This small step adds a nice texture contrast.
  5. You can serve the slaw immediately or let it chill for 20–30 minutes. Chilling allows the flavors to blend together even better. If making ahead, keep dressing separate until serving for best texture.

Notes

  • I like to chill the slaw before serving—it tastes even fresher
  • Don’t overdress it; add dressing gradually for better control
  • I always taste and adjust salt and lime at the end
  • Use fresh herbs only—dried herbs won’t give the same flavor
  • If it gets too spicy, I add more cucumber to balance the heat
