The Best Valentine's Day Muddy Buddies Recipe

I have to tell you—I absolutely fell in love making these Valentine’s Day Muddy Buddies! There’s something so satisfying about mixing crunchy cereal with sweet, colorful candy melts, and finishing it off with powdered sugar. Every bite feels festive, crunchy, and indulgent. I made a batch for my family, and they devoured it in minutes.

Ingredients

  • Chex cereal – 9 cups. This is the classic base for puppy chow providing the perfect crunch. Use rice or corn Chex for best results.
  • Pink candy melts – 1 cup. I love these for a fun Valentine’s twist. Adding a teaspoon of oil helps the melts coat the cereal smoothly.
  • Red candy melts – 1 cup. Works just like the pink melts for a double-colored effect.
  • Powdered sugar – 1 cup per batch. This gives the iconic “muddy” coating. Make sure the candy-coated cereal is slightly warm for better adhesion.
  • Neutral-flavored oil – 2 teaspoons. Helps thin the candy melts so they coat the cereal evenly without clumping.
  • Valentine’s Day M&M’s – 1 cup. Adds color sweetness, and a little crunch. I prefer the pink, red, and white mix for extra festive vibes.
  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles – 1/2 cup. Heart-shaped or themed sprinkles add that adorable final touch.

Method

  1. Divide your Chex cereal into two large bowls. This allows you to coat one batch with pink candy melts and the other with red, giving that fun Valentine’s Day color contrast.
  2. Microwave the pink candy melts with 1 teaspoon of oil in 30-second increments, stirring until smooth. Repeat with the red candy melts for the second batch.
  3. Pour the melted candy over each bowl of Chex cereal and gently fold until all pieces are evenly coated. Don’t rush—it ensures every piece is perfectly covered.
  4. Transfer each coated cereal batch into a Ziplock bag, add 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and shake well to cover. Spread onto wax paper to cool and prevent clumps.
  5. Once cooled, mix the pink and red Muddy Buddies together. Stir in the Valentine’s M&M’s and sprinkles for a festive, colorful finish.
  6. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container. Each bite is crunchy, sweet, and irresistible.

Notes

  • I always add a tiny bit of oil to candy melts—it keeps them smooth and prevents clumping.
  • Shaking the cereal while slightly warm helps the powdered sugar stick perfectly.
  • I spread the coated cereal on wax paper and gently separate pieces to avoid big clumps.
  • For brighter colors, I let each candy-coated batch set slightly before mixing.
