Watermelon Strawberry Fruit Skewers Recipe

I recently made these Watermelon Strawberry Fruit Skewers for a family gathering, and they disappeared faster than any other snack on the table. The combination of juicy watermelon and sweet strawberries creates a refreshing treat that feels perfect for warm days. What I love most is how simple they are to prepare while still looking beautiful when served.
Total Time 2 hours 33 minutes
Servings: 9

Ingredients

  • 1 small watermelon about 2½ pounds / 1.1 kg, peeled and cut into cubes – Choose a ripe, seedless watermelon for the sweetest flavor and easiest preparation.
  • 1 cup strawberries coarsely chopped – These are used to make the flavorful fruit syrup.
  • 1 cup sugar – Helps create a sweet syrup that enhances the natural fruit flavors.
  • 1 cup water – Combines with the sugar to form the syrup base.
  • 9 fresh strawberries hulled and halved – These are threaded onto the skewers for presentation and sweetness.
  • Juice of ½ lime – Adds brightness and balances the sweetness of the fruit.
  • A few fresh mint leaves or lemon balm leaves optional – Perfect for garnish and a refreshing aroma.

Method

  1. Start by removing the rind from the watermelon. Cut the flesh into 18 evenly sized cubes and place them in a glass baking dish. Save any leftover watermelon pieces because they will be used to create the fruit syrup.
  2. Place the watermelon scraps in a small saucepan. Add the chopped strawberries, sugar, and water, then bring everything to a gentle boil. Let the mixture simmer for several minutes until the fruit softens and releases its flavor.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Cooling prevents the syrup from softening the fruit too quickly and helps preserve the fresh texture of the watermelon cubes.
  4. Pour the cooled mixture through a fine sieve over the watermelon cubes. Make sure the fruit is evenly coated with the syrup. Allow the watermelon to marinate for about one hour so it absorbs the sweet berry flavor.
  5. Thread one watermelon cube and one strawberry half onto each short skewer. Arrange the assembled skewers neatly on a serving platter. Their bright red colors make them instantly eye-catching.
  6. Drizzle a little of the prepared fruit syrup over the skewers. Squeeze fresh lime juice on top and garnish with mint or lemon balm leaves if desired. Serve immediately for the freshest flavor.

Notes

  • I always choose the ripest watermelon possible because it provides the sweetest flavor without needing extra sugar.
  • I like chilling the fruit before assembling the skewers because they taste extra refreshing when served cold.
  • I make the syrup a few hours ahead so it has plenty of time to cool completely.
  • I use fresh lime juice rather than bottled juice because the flavor is brighter and more natural.
  • I drizzle only a small amount of syrup over the skewers to keep them fresh and easy to eat.
  • I garnish with mint leaves just before serving to keep them vibrant and aromatic.
