Zombie Brain Smoothie Recipe

I still remember the first time I blended this Zombie Brain Smoothie for my kids' Halloween party the second they saw that ghoulish green color, they were both grossed out and completely obsessed. I love how something this creepy-looking can actually be packed with good stuff like avocado, blueberries, and Greek yogurt.
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados – adds creaminess and healthy fats and you honestly won't taste it once it's blended
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries – brings natural sweetness and an icy chill without watering the smoothie down
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt – makes the texture thick and creamy while sneaking in extra protein
  • 2 tablespoons honey – balances out the earthy avocado flavor swap for maple syrup if you want it vegan
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder – this is the secret behind that eerie glowing green color
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk – thins everything to a drinkable consistency adjust to your liking
  • 1 cup ice cubes – keeps it cold and gives the smoothie a thick milkshake-like body
  • 2 packets unflavored gelatin optional – only needed if you want to set part of the mix into a brain-shaped garnish
  • Edible candy eyes optional – a fun, spooky touch that makes the drink look like it's watching you

Method

  1. I start by slicing my avocados in half, removing the pit, and scooping the flesh straight into the blender. If my blueberries are still rock hard from the freezer, I let them sit out for five minutes first. This little step makes the blending process much smoother and faster.
  2. Next, I add the Greek yogurt, honey, spirulina powder, and almond milk into the blender with the avocado and blueberries. I blend on high for about a minute, stopping halfway to scrape down the sides with my spatula. This ensures every bit of avocado gets fully incorporated.
  3. Once it looks mostly smooth, I add the ice cubes and blend again until the mixture turns thick and frosty. If it feels too thick for my blender to handle, I splash in a little more almond milk. I always taste it here to see if it needs more honey.
  4. If I'm feeling extra festive, I pour a small cup of the blended mixture into a saucepan with dissolved gelatin, then chill it in a brain-shaped mold for about 30 minutes. This step is purely for looks, so I only bother with it when I have time to spare.
  5. Once everything is blended and chilled, I pour the smoothie straight into glasses. If I made the gelatin brain, I pop it out of the mold and rest it right on top of the drink. Adding candy eyes at this point always gets the biggest reaction from my kids.

Notes

  • I always use ripe, slightly soft avocados since underripe ones leave a bitter aftertaste that even honey can't fully cover.
  • I never skip toasting my spirulina measurement carefully too much and the smoothie tastes distinctly like pond water.
  • I like to freeze my blueberries the night before so the smoothie stays extra cold without needing a ton of ice.
  • I keep a backup batch of almond milk nearby in case my blender struggles and I need to thin things out on the fly.
  • I taste as I go, because avocados vary so much in size that my sweetness levels shift from batch to batch.
